Working Trials
Why should you take part in working trials?
Working trials is a dog sport designed to test the working ability of the dogs taking part.
-
Gives your dog the chance to show its intelligence
-
Great for fitness with your dog
-
Suitable for both Pedigree and Crossbreed dogs
-
Useful canine skills are developed
-
If you love the great outdoors with your dog you will love working trials
The working trials exercises are basically divided into three sections:
Nosework
The dog and handler follows a `track` laid by a `track layer` (who is a stranger to the dog) approximately half a mile long.
As the dog follows the track it has to seek and recover articles placed along the track by the tracklayer. In UD the track is laid half an hour before the dog works and in TD the track is three hours old.
Search Square: The dog has to search and retrieve articles placed in a marked area.
Agility
The agility section will test the dog`s ability to negotiate a 3ft high jump, 8ft long jump and climb a 5ft 6” scale, (from January 2022). All the jumps are reduced for smaller dogs.
Control
There are various exercises in this section. `Heelwork`, is when the dog must walk at the side of the handler at normal, fast and slow pace. `Sendaway` is when the dog will have to leave the handler when instructed a minimum distance of 50 meters to a designated point in the field. Recall dog to handler. `Retrieving a dumbbell` is when the dog retrieves a dumbbell which has been thrown by the handler. Sit and Down stay out of sight for a period of time. Once your dog has progressed up the stakes, there is a steadiness to the gun and speak (bark) on command exercise.
